Does a Door Closer's Cycle Test Tell You How Many Years It Will Last?
2026-10-18
No. A door closer's cycle-test count describes repeated operation in a test; the count alone does not tell you how many years the closer will last on your door. YEN publishes model-specific cycle figures, including 300,000 cycles for Era and T-Slide and 200,000 cycles for Kapsa and Concealed. Use the figure when discussing durability, then confirm the model's suitability, fitting requirements and written warranty terms before buying.
What does a door closer's cycle count actually mean?
YEN's existing testing information describes cycles as opening and closing operations. The published number gives you a specific testing statement to ask about for the selected model. It does not, by itself, provide a calendar expiry date, a replacement interval or a warranty period.

The current Designer Door Closers range lists these examples:
| Model | Published cycle-test count | Listed door weight capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Era | 300,000 cycles | 120 kg |
| T-Slide | 300,000 cycles | 65 kg |
| Kapsa | 200,000 cycles | 50 kg |
| Concealed | 200,000 cycles | 100 kg |
These are separate specifications. Era and T-Slide share a cycle figure but have different listed capacities. The shared count does not establish that either will fit the same door or meet the same installation requirements.
Why can't you turn the count into guaranteed years?
Dividing a cycle count by an assumed number of daily openings gives an arithmetic estimate based on that assumption. It does not establish how long the installed product will serve you. Even the daily-use assumption needs checking: describe how your household uses that particular door rather than borrowing a traffic estimate from an office or shop.
The published cycle figure alone does not tell you the test's door load, opening angle, operating conditions or assessment criteria. Ask for those details if they matter to your purchase. Do not assume the test reproduced your entrance or that reaching the stated count defines when a closer must fail.
Likewise, avoid turning a phrase such as "years of use" into a promised number of years. A service-life promise needs its own clear scope and supporting information.
Does a higher cycle count automatically make a closer right for your home?
Choose against the door's requirements as well as the testing statement. Start with the door weight and fitting arrangement, then explain the closing behaviour you need. The fitter should confirm suitability for the actual door before installation.

For example, a buyer considering the 300,000-cycle T-Slide still needs to check its listed 65 kg capacity and slide-channel fitting. A buyer considering Concealed needs to discuss the installation space: YEN's product information states that it can be installed in a 40 mm door. Neither enquiry is settled by comparing cycle counts alone.
If you are replacing a closer, provide the existing model and photographs of the body, arm and fixing positions. Ask whether the proposed model suits that arrangement instead of assuming a matching cycle figure makes it a direct replacement.
Is a cycle-test statement the same as a warranty?
Treat testing information and warranty terms as separate purchase questions. A count does not state who handles a claim, what is covered, what exclusions apply or how long cover lasts.
Ask the seller for the written terms applicable to the exact model and purchase. Keep those terms with the invoice and product details. If a service-life or replacement promise is part of the offer, ask for that wording in writing too. This is a request for clarity, not a statement that YEN offers any particular warranty period or replacement arrangement.
What should you ask before placing the order?
Send the seller or fitter a short enquiry that connects the test figure to your own door:
- Which exact model are you recommending, and what cycle-test figure is published for it?
- Does its listed capacity and fitting arrangement suit my door?
- What test information can you supply for this model?
- What installation, adjustment and care instructions should I retain?
- What written warranty terms apply to this purchase, and who should I contact with a problem?
Use the YEN enquiry page to share the door details and any information still needed. A model-specific answer helps you assess the purchase without treating an operating-cycle count as a calendar guarantee.
