Learning to test the hard way

In 1991, India opened its economy to the world. Foreign hardware brands started competing directly with Indian manufacturers, including YEN Door Closer. Rather than compete on price alone, the company changed how it proved quality. It began running door closers through 200,000 open-and-close cycles before calling a design finished. That is roughly the equivalent of decades of daily use in a busy building. Very few Indian manufacturers were doing this kind of testing at the time. YEN learned the practice from manufacturers abroad and built it into how every new product gets approved, not just as a one-time check.

That same period pushed YEN into hotter markets too. The company started selling to the Middle East, where regular hydraulic fluid could thicken or thin out in extreme heat. So YEN developed fluids rated to work from minus 20 degrees Celsius up to 45 degrees Celsius. A door closer that works fine in a mild Delhi winter needs to work just as well in Gulf summer heat, and that gap is what pushed the engineering forward.

Recognition that followed the work

The two milestones above, consistent tooling and real cycle testing, are part of why YEN Door Closer has been recognised with the NBT Times Group Business Icons award and the Udyog Ratan award from Dainik Jagran. Awards like these do not replace the daily work of testing and manufacturing. But they mark a moment when that work was noticed outside the factory, by people who look at Indian manufacturing as a whole and ask which companies are actually building it well.

If you run a hardware shop, or you are an architect specifying door closers for a new project, none of this history matters unless it shows up in the product on your shelf or in your building. That is really the point of these milestones. The custom tooling from 1966 is why YEN products from different production runs still match each other. The cycle testing introduced in the 1990s, since scaled up to as high as 300,000 cycles on models like the T-Slide, is why closers hold up in high-traffic doors, in schools, offices, and hospitals, year after year. The heat-tolerant fluid work is why the same engineering approach that suits Delhi also suits harder climates.
