Single Action vs Double Action Spring Hinges: Which One Does Your Door Need?

2026-08-26

Spring hinges look like ordinary door hinges, but they do more work. They close the door on their own, without a separate closer body on top. The catch is that not every spring hinge works the same way. Before you order a set, you need to know if your door needs a single action hinge or a double action hinge. Get this wrong and the door will not swing the way you want.

What single action actually means

A single action spring hinge lets a door swing one way, then springs it back shut. This is the setup most home and shop doors use. The door opens inward or outward, never both, and the spring pulls it closed each time.

YEN makes single action spring hinges in a few builds. The Powder Coated Single Action hinge has a heavy gauge M.S body and flap, with a premium look from the mix of powder coating and steel. It comes in Matt Black and Matt Brown, in 100mm and 125mm sizes. The M.S. Single Action hinge uses an even heavier gauge body and flap, built to be easier to install, also in 100mm and 125mm. For a stainless option, the S.S. 304 Single Action hinge uses heavy gauge 3mm S.S. 304 body, with Antique, PVD Gold, PVD Rose Gold, and satin brushed finishes, again in 100mm and 125mm.

What double action means

A double action spring hinge lets a door swing both ways, in and out, and springs back to centre either time. Think of a kitchen door in a restaurant, or any door where people pass through from both sides carrying things in their hands. A single action hinge cannot do this job. Only a double action spring hinge can.

YEN's Powder Coated Double Action hinge has the same heavy gauge M.S body and flap as its single action sibling, in Matt Black and Matt Brown, but it comes in a wider size range: 75mm, 100mm, 125mm, and 150mm. The M.S. Double Action hinge, with its heaviest gauge body and flaps, covers the same four sizes. The S.S. 304 Double Action hinge brings stainless steel to the double action range, with Antique, PVD Gold, PVD Rose Gold, and satin brushed finishes, in 100mm, 125mm, and 150mm.

Why the extra sizes matter

Notice that the double action hinges go down to 75mm, while the single action range starts at 100mm. A smaller door, or a lighter cupboard-style door, often needs that smaller 75mm size, and it is only available on the double action side of YEN's spring hinge range. If your project has smaller doors that swing both ways, that 75mm option is worth checking for before you order.

Adjustable spring strength, on every model

Every spring hinge in YEN's range, single action or double action, powder coated M.S. or S.S. 304, has adjustable spring strength. A fitter can set how firmly the door closes after the hinge is fitted, rather than being stuck with a fixed setting from the factory. This matters because door weight, hinge friction, and even draughts near an entrance can all change how firm a setting the door actually needs on site.

A special case: toilet cubicles

Bathrooms and toilet cubicles need their own kind of spring hinge, because humidity is a constant problem there. YEN's Toilet Cubicle hinge is made from heavy 304 grade stainless steel, built specifically for humid conditions, with concealed fixing screws for a clean look on the cubicle door. It comes in two sizes, 3.25" x 3" x 1" and 3.25" x 2.25" x 1", and like the rest of the range, its spring strength is adjustable. This is not a single or double action choice so much as a material choice, S.S. 304 resists the moisture that would corrode a plain M.S. hinge over time.

How to decide

Start with how the door needs to swing. If it only ever opens one way, a single action spring hinge is the right fit, and you can choose between powder coated M.S. or S.S. 304 depending on the look and the environment. If the door swings both ways, like a kitchen or a busy internal doorway, go with a double action spring hinge instead, and remember that this is also where the smaller 75mm size lives. For a bathroom or toilet cubicle, the S.S. 304 Toilet Cubicle hinge is built for exactly that humid, high-use setting.

All of these spring hinges are made to replace normal hinges directly, so a hardware shop or fitter working across Delhi or anywhere else in India can swap them in without changing the door frame. Match the action, the size, and the material to the door in front of you, and the hinge will do its job quietly for years.
